Mongolia: the Steppe Song

11 August 2014

Ulan-Ude, Russia

I resisted, but after the Forbidden Ditty, Liz and the kids said we needed a musical video travel blog to celebrate Mongolia. Shoot, if someone's going to take my art form and engage it, I couldn't say no for very long. Especially when they acceded to my one request -- that we make the song a cappella. Then we worked all together to decide what song to base it off (to maximize vehemence).

Now as you can see, we had a lot of fun putting together this musical video travel blog. Some would say we went too far. Others would correct them and say we went way too far. But, with a twinkle, we dressed up in gers, stood in roads and spun around on hillocks all to make our point: Mongolia is a lot of fun! If I have time I'll put together another video that has the various episodes a little more coherently gathered, but for what it's worth, here is the Steppe Song:

(True) Facts About Making a Musical Video Travel Blog: This is a serious pain-in-the-butt art form, and I wish I could have cottoned on to something more practical, like collecting hubcaps. To fully enjoy the lip syncing, remember that 1) these people are singing full throated and vehemently at every venue, but 2) they have no click track, 3) so they sing at about 10 different rhythms (sometimes on the same master track). Just for fun, 4) everyone is singing the words at different times (so one person may be synced to the master track while someone else is not even moving their lips), 5) some people may have just learned the words, and 6) it's a bit pitchy anyway. These are battlefield conditions! There are reasons you're not supposed to do this. So kick back, thrill to the ridiculousness of it all, and join in: make your own musical travel video blog and link to it here. There is one basic rule: sing some of the words while you're on location! That's what puts the muse in musical.
